FREE RPO Concert, 7:30 pm, Feb. 20th, PHS Auditorium The Penfield Community is invited to attend a FREE Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra Concert at 7:30 pm Saturday, Feb. 20th in the new Penfield High School auditorium. The concert marks the culmination of a residency project during which American Studies honors students at PHS are experiencing first-hand the relationship between music and culture. Under Conductor Michael Butterman and guest soprano Elena O’Connor, a 1998 Penfield High School graduate, the orchestra will perform “The Sound of America” with music by – or influenced by – American composers and American culture. "This residency has been stimulating for both for me and, I believe, the students and teachers at Penfield" noted Butterman. "The students are bright and engaged, and I've been impressed with the high-level critical thinking that is encouraged and nurtured by the faculty." Through the interactive and interdisciplinary approach, the Penfield students were able to understand the role of the arts in reflecting, shaping, and defining history. Students were required to write a research paper following Butterman’s lectures and seminars by PHS English and history teachers. Sponsored by the RPO’s Education Department, the Penfield Music Commission Project, and the Rochester Arts and Cultural Council, the RPO-Penfield High School partnership has been in process since last summer. "This collaboration with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, like several others over past years, allows students to interact face-to-face with world class artists who bring a primary authenticity to the learning," said Music Department Chair Jim Doser. "It can’t be replicated through the internet, books, or recordings. It’s the real thing!"
