Penfield TIES
Penfield TIES
Together Including Every Student (TIES) promotes the participation of students and young adults who have developmental disabilities in inclusive, organized extracurricular and community activities through the support of trained student volunteers.
TIES offers opportunities for all members of the school community to be involved, whether as a participant, peer volunteer, or activity leader.
Participants (ages 8 through 22) who have developmental disabilities join activities where they can develop recreational interests, learn about their community, and have fun with peers.
Peer volunteers (grades 8 through 12) learn how to support participants according to their individual needs, gain more understanding of disabilities and diversity, and make a positive difference in a peer’s life.
Activity leaders create an experience where all individuals and talents are included, and promote community awareness and inclusion.
Penfield’s program is supported by TIES coordinator, Jessica DeWitt, who acts as a resource for the District, helps develop the individual support plans in partnership with participants and their families, recruits and trains peer volunteers, and ensures the program runs smoothly.
TIES is being offered at Penfield in partnership between the Office of Special Education and Starbridge, a nonprofit organization that serves people who have disabilities - and their families and others who support them – and helps them achieve success in education, employment, and healthy living.
We are currently recruiting peer volunteers. Once this process is complete, we will begin accepting participant applications and providing support services. If you are interested in your child being a participant, be on the lookout for the participant application in the coming weeks!
