Throughout September and October, Penfield Central School District will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, honoring the histories, cultures, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans.

“Across the District, our schools will be hosting a variety of activities, educational events, and cultural showcases that reflect the rich heritage and diversity within our community,” said Maycanitza Pérez, Assistant Superintendent for Educational Services.

In the classroom, teachers will bring the year’s national theme, Unidos, Somos Más. Together, We Are More., to life as students learn about the deep influence Hispanic and Latino communities have had on the history and culture of the United States.

Additionally, students across the District will have the opportunity to participate in Rhythms of Life: Interactive Drumming and Life-Skill Development, an engaging artist residency led by renowned percussionist and educator Freddy Colón.

A highly respected percussionist, educator, and community advocate, Mr. Colón has performed with internationally recognized artists including Aretha Franklin, Tito Puente, Philip Bailey of Earth, Wind & Fire, and Mike Phillips. He has taught percussion through the Eastman School of Music’s Community Education Division and has spent decades partnering with schools and community organizations to create impactful experiences for young people.

During his time in the District, Mr. Colón will help students build both musical skills and life skills by combining hands-on percussion instruction with social-emotional learning and leadership development.

Throughout the residency, students will explore the cultural roots of drumming while learning foundational percussion techniques, rhythmic patterns, ensemble performance, improvisation, and collaborative music-making. Each lesson intentionally connects a musical concept to a real-world skill, creating meaningful opportunities for personal growth and self-expression.

In addition to in-school activities, the District will host two evening events for families and community members.

 “We encourage your family to join us in learning, celebrating, and honoring the many contributions Hispanic and Latino Americans have made to our nation and communities,” said Pérez.

Rhythms of Heritage: A Night with Europa ROC

Europa is a high-energy seven-piece band that celebrates the iconic sound and spirit of Carlos Santana. With powerful Latin percussion, soaring guitar lines, and dynamic improvisation, the group creates a joyful, soul-stirring experience that inspires audiences to dance, feel, and connect.
